Canvas quality and suitability reviews
A bit of a spin off from the latest blog post about quality materials and the Facebook discussion. I'm sure many of us have tried a few brands of stretched canvas to see what suits our purpose the best. I thought I'd share some of the brands I've tried and what I found. I'd love other's feedback on brands, especially Victorian made products.
I've tries some really, really cheap but not going to bother reviewing those. Please note I work in acrylics, almost entirely Atelier Interactives which behave differently to most brands, so this definitely will impact the canvas you might choose.
I've put a sharpener in the close up shots for a sense of scale.
Mont Marte professional series. 380gsm. Deep edge, pine frame, no corner bracing. Available in discount stores. Even medium texture, larger raised areas. This painting has around 3-4 layers of paint on it.

Unpainted, you can see tiny popped bubbles in the gesso.

I'll reply with more brands. Please share yours too!
Thanks Kalina, that's really interesting and the photos showing the 'tooth' of the canvas are great. I don't have a photo to add to the mix but Seniors offer a range of canvas and linen in any size you need. I've been very happy with their product. Obviously price varies depending on the surface you need but for the quality I've found their prices reasonable.
