The sparkle of a spontaneous artist

The sparkle of a spontaneous artist

I found myself soul searching into my selfie. Am I my eyes? These eyes that delight in clouds, in pareidolia in birds and animals, in people and kindnesses. Eyes so quick to crease with laughter.

Am I my hair? Though recognisable, my hair has never conformed, I've tried to cut it, straighten it, colour it, and now I know it is quirky and intrinsically me.

And like my hair, I don't really have a style, so how best do I share a glimpse of who I am? Underneath this hair and behind these eyes are memories, stored of my wonder at the most superb drawings a little 8 year old me could luck across. Not only did The magic faraway tree let me escape into fantasy, but Dorothy M Wheeler had shared her wonderful illustrations and I was entranced, if only Dorothy had known the joy she was giving. Those lines! they curved thick  and thin so effortlessly. I observed and practiced over and over. Nothing had to be serious in this world and as such this is where I'm most happy

I've drawn my portait in graphite and pencil, entwined in my hair are the characters that taught me humour, kindnesses and whimsicality, this is the colour in my world and in my Selfie.
