Send Pic
This work was a response to my experience of online dating, and the request to "send pic" (Insert eyeroll here).
It's about the desire to present yourself in a flattering light, yet we know it's a masked version of ourselves, trying to be more youthful or less 'something else', which is ridiculous given that our wisdom and character come from our lived experiences as we have aged. The "selfie" has been carefully curated like other parts of ourselves that we present in new situations, curated to keep the unpalatable aspects of life out of view (signified here by the rope).
This painting highlights to me the absurdity of this social exchange, and raises many other questions around aging. What really made me happy with this work was a last minute decision to cover the eyes, for the eyes represent truth to me and here, she is hidden.
