Sea/Me
This self portrait aims to show my closeness to the sea - both physically and spiritually. I have lived near the sea for most of my life. The portrait also relates to my migration by sea from England in the 1950s. The ship in the background and the figure in the foreground bear the remnants of streamers- a sign of farewell which also signifies broken albeit lingering ties with those family members left behind. I have portrayed the subject partially merging with the sea whilst the streamers draping the subject can also be interpreted as waves lapping the figure.
