Based on the "Sweet Hearts" lollies of her youth, "Sweet, with Substance" explores the nostalgia and simplicity of love and romance as the artist once understood it, while updating the messages written on each candy with characteristics that she now seeks within her adult relationships. The sweetness and delight of romance remains, but the importance of qualities like honesty, kindness and strong communication have become a necessary update to the cute but slightly inane messages 
 of the original Sweet Hearts, such as "Kiss Me" and "Be Mine".
