Media release: Sharon Greenaway mixed media artist.
Sharon Greenaway’s next show ‘Look Closer’ showcases her miniature work, including a new diorama inspired by the current Bendigo Art Gallery’s Paris: Impressions of Life 1880 – 1925.
‘I have worked in miniature one way or another for over 10 years and this exhibition will be a taste of what I do, including a new diorama that was inspired after seeing two gorgeous Parisian fans on the Bendigo art galleries’ social media. I knew I simply had to make a miniature fan shop.
The first thing I did was to I contact the historic fan boutique in Paris, Duvelleroy for assistance.
Using the reference image they kindly sent me as well as doing lots of other research I decided to create a miniature fan shop with a sunflower inspired façade which was based on another Art Nouveau building that still stands today, in Douai, France.(1906-1907, Albert Pepe.)’
Greenaway didn’t realise how many hours it would take to research, design and create the miniature store la Maison Mme Sharon.
‘The fiddliest bit was making fans that looked like real ones but at 1/12th scale.
I created an Eiffel Tower ‘tourist’ fan using a photo my daughter gave me which was fun.
The biggest challenge was making a miniature ostrich feather fan as I didn’t want to use real feathers. Finally I managed to make a lovely black one using faux feathers, matchsticks and beads.’
Other miniature pieces in Look Closer feature native flowers and animals of the Loddon region, in various scales.
Look Closer will be at Exhibit B Central (Bendigo Bank Central inside in the Bendigo Bank arcade) from 2nd April for four weeks.
Thanks must go to City of Greater Bendigo, Creative Communities for this opportunity, for both the exhibition space and also for awarding Greenaway a Sprout grant. Also thanks to the Bendigo Bank.
