Arana’s artwork is inspired by the recent discovery that her late great uncle was an artist. This was so unexpected, and finding his charcoal portrait led her to question what life might have been like for him. Wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens, she noticed a cactus with golden spikes at the top and many more silver spikes down its length. It looked to her like royalty and an army following. In this painting, the man is dominant but the responsibility is heavy. This is a collaboration between a great uncle and his great niece, and a reflection on how much has evolved in society in a very short period of time.
