Lou Whelan

The Real Work

An emergent artist originally from Ireland, I migrated to Australia in 1991 & currently live in Victoria’s spectacular Yarra Valley - a place whose people & landscapes have informed and inspired much of my work to date. I credit my photographic beginnings to time spent as a child in my father’s makeshift home darkroom & to my first film camera - a Rollei 35 LED. Late in 2017, after a long break from meaningful photography & intrigued by the potential of the connective, therapeutic & transformational qualities of this medium in navigating a co-existence with disability, I ended my long career as a health professional to pursue photography full-time. Primarily self-taught, I have been mentored by fine-art film photographer Kate Baker & veteran photojournalist Jim McEwan, in addition to participating in ongoing education & specialist masterclasses. I am interested in diverse experiences of living. I feel the world & my camera is how I dialogue with others about what I intuit & notice. Working in digital & analogue formats, I specialise in fine-art, portrait, documentary & editorial work - with a particular interest in end of life & memorial work. I have been a finalist in the 2020 Australian Photography Awards & my images are held in private collections on several continents. My work has been exhibited locally in Australia & overseas in solo & group shows at YAVA Gallery, Healesville, Yarra Glen Art Show, The International Centre for Photography, New York (permanent archive); Blank Wall Gallery, Athens; & Matca Gallery, Hanoi. I have also contributed images to The Mass Isolation Project - the global digital archive collaboration of Derby Quad, UK, The Northern Centre of Photography, Finland, The Centre for Photography, Ireland & Ballarat Foto Biennale. I accept private & commercial commissions & assignments. To view more of my images, order prints, make a booking or other enquiries please contact me at: or via any of my social media links
