Artist Statement
Presented as part of Melbourne Fringe and in partnership with Hobsons Bay City Council, artists from Melbourne's West get in the swing and see their worlds from new perspectives.
Wunder Gym is a practical art program to stretch and satisfy creative curiosity of emerging, established or simply curious creatives who revel in the opportunity to extend their skills and practice culminating in a group exhibition.
Artists in this exhibition have been mentored by contemporary artist Elvis Richardson. Artists from Melbourne’s Western regions have drawn inspiration from their local environment and communities as their playground. This prompt invited artists to be collectors, editors and curators using their local environment’s objects, recordings, sounds, images as their raw material and inspiration for an artwork. Exploring how their art practice changes the function of the chosen object.
Join these artists for the Opening of their exhibition, Recollections.
The exhibition will run Wednesday 4 to Sunday 22 October 2023, 11am-3pm on Wednesdays to Sundays. In addition to the physical exhibition at The Annex in Werribee, large temporary public art installations will be located at Laneway Gallery at 44 Woods Street Laverton, and the Altona Civic Centre.
Wyndham City Council recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first Peoples of Australia. We acknowledge the Bunurong and Wadawurrung Peoples as Traditional Owners of the lands on which Wyndham City operates. The Wadawurrung and Bunurong Peoples have and always will belong to the Werribee Yalook (river), creeks, stars, hills and red clay of this Country. We pay respect to their Ancestors and Elders who always have, and always will, care for Country and community today and for future generations.
